Based on the Vision Statement you created last week, you
will now plan the courses you need for the remainder of your time in the MTL
Program. You should read through the course descriptions and get a feel for
what courses you feel would help you to attain your personal goals. The
Course Descriptions can be found at http://mtl.uis.edu
under Course Information.
This is a 40 hour program. Twenty of these hours are required,
and the remaining 20 are taken as elective hours.
1.) Please be aware that you must
take all five required courses:
·
EDL 585 Foundations of Teacher Leadership – 4 hours
·
EDL 541 Educational Research – 4 hours
·
EDL 542 Teacher Leadership – 4 hours
·
EDL 543 Instructional Design – 4 hours
·
EDL 586 MTL Capstone – 4 hours
2.) Of these five courses, EDL
585 should be among one of the very first courses you take, and EDL 586 can
only be taken after you have completed 32 semester hours of MTL coursework,
including EDL 541 and EDL 542. EDL 586 is the culmination of all your
coursework, so it is preferable that this course is the last, or close to the
last course you take.
3.) ALL other coursework may be
taken in ANY order.
4.) The remaining 20 hours of
course work can be chosen from any of the remaining courses listed in the
Course Descriptions. There are almost 50 courses to choose from.
5.) Be sure to check the
semesters each course will be offered. Some courses will definitely NOT
be offered at certain times. For example, EDL 586 and EDL 542 will NEVER
be offered during the summer semesters due to time constraints.
6.) Once you send your schedule
to Kim Kubatzke, MTL Coordinator, your courses are “penciled” into the
schedule. This means that you will have a guaranteed seat in your
preferred course for the first month registration is open. If you don’t register within the first 30 days, your
permission will expire and your ‘seat’ will be given to someone on the waiting
list.
7.) Please note that the second semester students take courses in the MTL
program, students may not get the exact schedule they requested (and you will
be notified as soon as Kim receives your schedule). This occurs because
there is a time lapse between setting the schedule with the university and
students setting their schedules with MTL.
8.) Every semester, you will need
to contact the coordinator to receive With Permission of Instructor (WPI)
approval to register. This prevents your seats being taken by non-MTL
students. This also allows you the opportunity to change your mind if a
course no longer meets your needs or if your personal goals change.
