STUDENT PROFILE |
Dave is a mathematics and social studies teacher in a Department of Defense high school in Korea. He will be coming back to the United States in three years and wants to return with a master's degree to help him find employment in his home state of Illinois. He is also interested in becoming chairman of the Mathematics Department at the school, but does not want to earn a Type 75 General Administrative certificate. Because of family obligations, he cannot give up the time during the summer to work on a master's degree, so he is looking for something online. The best computers and Internet access are at the school, which is forty-five minutes from his apartment in Seoul, but he is quite familiar with researching and communicating online and does have regular access to the computer after school hours. His plan: Dave's combined goal of gaining a master's degree and working in a leadership role fits perfectly into the MTL degree. He will start his course load in looking at both his classroom and schools in general as organizations, and then work toward looking at the school in the community. His elective courses will not have to be in his mathematics or social studies specializations, but in something else that interests him regarding leadership. He may have to adjust his schedule a bit for any synchronous 'chats' because he is a time zone that is totally different than the rest of his classmates, but the experiences he will bring to these online discussions will be invaluable. Dave cannot take courses during the summer due to his travel schedule, but still wants to complete his degree in three years, so he is taking two courses in the fall and spring semesters. He has designed his course load this way:
