NING'S PROFILE

Ning worked for a large corporation in St. Louis as a human resources specialist for ten years before deciding he wanted to teach. He has just graduated from a small private teacher's college in Missouri and has been hired to teach first grade in East St. Louis. Although he has just started his teaching career, Ning wants to improve quickly and is very interested in obtaining National Master Teaching Certification, both for the knowledge he will gain for use in his classroom and for future promotions. He has also been a Boy Scout leader for five years. He has his own computer, and while is not totally comfortable doing much beyond sending e-mail, one of his goals is to create his own Web page as he works toward his degree. He is starting in the spring so he can concentrate on teaching his first semester. He is taking longer than most students so he can prepare for National (NBPTS) Certification.

His plan:

Ning is interested in continuing his education, especially in ways that will help him improve his current teaching and assist him long-term. His plan includes an early concentration on working with curriculum, then builds to what he can use as he has more time in the classroom – including the Technology in the Classroom course, where he will learn how to create a Web page. Then he can use his other courses to explore possible avenues of working beyond the classroom. As Ning proceeds through the degree concentration, he will receive whatever help he needs from his instructors and from the Office of Technology Education. He has spoken with them already and is comfortable that he will be supported as he learns how to navigate the Internet.

Ning's preparation for the NBPTS certification will take almost three years. He has also decided to take one course each school semester and two during the summer. Because he is working on the certification, which calls for a great deal of reflection and writing, he has decided to take the research course early-on. He has designed his course load this way:
