EDL 541       EDUCATIONAL RESEARCH METHODS                   4 HOURS

Basic research methods in education.  Includes qualitative and quantitative research design, sampling, ethics, instrumentation, and validity.  The goal is to increase critical and analytical capabilities and to enhance strategies and systems for achieving excellence in education. Proctored Exam is required  

Course Objectives

The goal of this course is to make you into better consumers and creators of research. More specifically, this course should leave you more competent, confident and discerning when you read educational resaerch reports and it should leave you more competent and confident when you design and conduct your own resaerch projects.

EDL 542       TEACHER LEADERSHIP                             4 HOURS

Examination of leadership characteristics and application of processes and strategies of teacher leadership.  The goal is the ability to understand and apply problem-solving tools while working with people in educational settings. Teachers must have access to an educational setting to work with a group of adult peers on a school improvement process.

Software for creating charts, graphs, tables and other visuals is required.

Course Objectives

  • Explore leadership theory and the practices of exemplary leaders
  • Relate leadership strategies to everyday school/work experiences
  • Practice leadership activities for improvement in school/work setting

EDL 543      INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN                           4 HOURS

Examination of the role of standards and curriculum at district and school levels in shaping educational changes and reforms.  The goal is to examine and understand curriculum and instructional issues within the context of reform efforts.  Many of the lectures are in PowerPoint format.

Course Objectives

  • Become Familiar with state and national standards
  • Understand the implications of standards-based change for school organizations.
  • Understand and be able to articulate how schools will need to be different in a standards-based system committed to high standards of instruction for teachers and achievement for all students
  • Learn to translate outcome statements into explicit indicators of performance that will guide redesign of instruction and assessment for the classroom
  • Understand what the role of the classroom teacher must be in supporting change efforts, encouraging collaboration, and building capacity for school-wide improvement
  • Learn to analyze and evlauate the current curriculum in order to become a teacher-leader in building level reform efforts

EDL 585       FOUNDATIONS OF TEACHER LEADERSHIP (Required-preferably the first course taken)  4 HOURS

Provides an examination of learning to become a teacher leader and being a member of an online community.  Included are strategies for e-learning, teacher leaders as part of a virtual learning community, graduate level research and writing, and creating an e-portfolio.

EDL 586       CAPSTONE COURSE (Required-preferably the last course taken)          4 HOURS

Implementation of an inquiry-based school improvement effort in a local school setting.  Students lead a team to define a problem, analyze its causes and review applicable background research, develop and implement an action plan, analyze results and make recommendations for further continuous improvement.  Through this effort students demonstrate the skills exemplifying the MTL program’s core values:  (1) teacher leadership, (2) accountability through data-based decision making, and (3) continuous improvement in teaching and learning. Teachers must have access to an educational setting to work with a group of adult peers on a school improvement process.
