MTL STUDENT PROFILES

To help you determine if the MTL degree concentration could meet your needs, we have created below a few sample, hypothetical teachers who are working on the MTL concentration to accomplish their professional goals. Perhaps one or more will fit your situation. As you read the descriptions of their course plans, please note that they include (for simplicity) only a few of the many courses that are available.

"I think that the MTL program at UIS Springfield is the right program for educational students who want to get a Masters Degree, but who are employed full time. In rural Illinois, there are many professionals who want to get their masters degree, but the distance to the University makes it costly in gasoline and time. With this program there is no need to wait to enroll. Anyone can begin becoming more valuable in the job market. While it does require self discipline and organization skills, it is an alternative approach for graduate studies. This program delivers a user friendly educational package for the adult student who is searching for an economical Masters in education while they work a full time job. I constantly tell others about the program because of the cost, convenience and manageability of class time. It is really centered around each student's schedule. My classes were interesting because we had a wide range of diversity through the International students that gave rich perspectives on the material. MTL doesn't try to be diverse, it is because we share a global classroom. I can honestly recommend this program to my friends."

"Take everything you know now about being a teacher leader in your school and multiply it 10 times and you will get a  feel for what you learn in the MTL program. This program not only taught me how to do in-depth research using expert resources but also how to organize and analyze improvements for my building. It has also broadened my understanding of how schools function at a much higher level than I ever knew before. My writing skills have increased exponentially. The online feature of this program makes it doable for every busy teacher. While it may be a demanding program, it has enough flexibility that a teacher can still set priorities that allow the teacher to do other things. All of the classes had weekly accountability for each student. The weekly discussion board takes the place of attending classes and allows the participants to interact with each other. I have participated in class at UIS while traveling. I would carry a laptop computer; find an Internet cafe to send work to my instructors; then off I would go again. Test were scheduled at a test center. The people at my public library were kind enough to proctor tests. For Illinois residents, the tuition is the same as other state universities with some added charges for the classes being online. The pace is very fast. While there are a great deal of flexibility in the curriculum, I had to use strong self discipline not to fall behind. This program is for self motivated individuals. A fast Internet connection is also helpful. The first time I will set foot on campus would be when I cross the stage to graduate."
